Early stages of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) can be successfully treated with various nutritional supplements. AD is caused by an over deposit of a substance called amyloid in the brain. Amyloid deposits “aggravate” the brain’s immune system and the immune system retaliates by releasing damaging substances such as cytokines and oxidants. These substances can cause destruction to the neurons in the brain which help with memory, personality, mood, speech and language. Current medications like Tacrine and Aricept do not prevent the damage to these neurons. Antioxidant herbs and nutrients, however, can partially protect the brain and can slow the progression of the Alzheimer’s disease.
